Mr Plaha is a Consultant Neurosurgeon with specialist interest in Brain tumour surgery. He completed his basic medical MBBS training in 1996 and General surgical MS degree training in 2000 from one of India's premier medical institutes at JIPMER, University of Pondicherry, India.
He completed his neurosurgery training from the Bristol and also an MD degree from Bristol in 2010. He has done a double fellowship in Endoscopy neurosurgery and Skull base brain tumour surgery from Oxford, 2010- 2012. Since Aug 2012, he has been a Consultant neurosurgeon with a substantive post since Aug 2013 at the John Radcliffe Oxford University Hospitals.
He is a Brain tumour specialist and Lead of Oxford Neuro oncology MDT since Aug 2012 and also Lead for the Thames valley Cancer network for Brain tumours. He took over as Chair of the Neuro oncology section of the Society of British Neurological Surgeons in March 2019. He is also Associate Editor of the British Journal of Neurosurgery since Oct 2018.
He has developed new techniques for minimally invasive endoscopic resection of brain tumours and established advanced techniques for awake brain tumour surgery. He has vast experience in awake brain tumour surgery and performs some of the highest number of awake brain tumour operations in the UK.
He leads a research group into understanding brain networks affected by brain tumours, looking into novel surgical modalities which make brain surgery safer, understanding immunotherapy for brain tumours and novels clinical trials for brain cancer. He supervises up to 2 PhD/Dphil students every year.
He has published papers on the topic of brain tumour surgery, and is a tutor at the College of Surgeons of England and faculty at international course. He teaches on “White fibre Course” courses educating neurosurgeons on the anatomy and techniques of awake brain tumour surgery.
He has undertaken more than 1000 brain tumour operations including both awake surgery and minimally invasive endoscopic surgery. He is frequently asked to provide second opinions for patients both nationally and internationally.
